Karin Taylor – Beyond the Stick Figure (Books & e-Books)

“Karin’s interaction with artists and art lovers over the years has increased her awareness of how common it is for people to lack confidence in their creative ability.

In her 98 page book Beyond the Stick Figure, Karin shares her creative journey in order to demonstrate how someone who was not recognised as gifted, became an artist. The book is complimented by images of her paintings and early drawings. Karin provides fresh hope by demystifying the creative process and shedding light on how to fuel inspiration and nourish the artist within.

Drawing from her experience as a visual artist Karin takes on the role of mentor explaining how creative self-expression is something everyone can enjoy. This is a refreshing resource full of insight, practical help, reassurance, and lots of hints and tips to get people started on a fulfilling creative path.

The book covers topics such as inspiration, imagination, daydreams and mini retreats, passion, encouragement, environment, research, observation, procrastination, intuition, decision making and goal setting, insecurity, criticism, practise, goal setting, frustration, patience and mistakes, genres and mediums, stories behind art and drawing tips.”

Yesh people!! Karin’s very own book, now out and available at Blurb.com!! =D Click here for a 27 page preview of the wonderfully illustrated book~ I’ve met many people, salesperson, nurses, craftswomen, school kids, who’d tell me that they can’t draw for nuts.. that the most they can pull off is the simple stickmen.. But after guiding a few of them, it’s very encouraging to see their happy faces when they’re please with what they can produce! =D So i’m absolutely thrilled when i realised Karin’s producing a book for those of us who feels keen but worries at the same time.. Personally, i believe that drawings just need to start somewhere..

Read about how not all artists starts with a BANG~ Like how we often read artist biography about them starting at the age of 4 and such.. what, you think at 4, ALL of them are capable of producing awesome inspiring artworks? Naaa.. there are a few prodigies.. but most of them, built up their skills through time~

Learn what are some of the important elements that can actually help in digging out those creative juices that you’ve frozen in pursuit of paper qualifications, career, or homemaking~ No no, don’t get me wrong.. Am not asking you guys out there to drop everything and go become an artist or designer.. but rather give yourself a chance, and try drawing again as a pastime maybe? =D you might be more talented than you give yourself credit for you know?

Book Reviews and Comments:

3rd year on RedBubble… Thank you, Karin! =D

Eheh.. after reading Karin’s journal, i just realised that it’s been 3 years since i first joined RB!! O_O wow… it’s been really fun.. I was so afraid when i left the corporate world last time.. not knowing where to go in life.. but thanks to Ganz i was introduced to redbubble.. and from there, i met so many lovely people!! One of which inspire and gave me so much strength and encouragement.. her name is familiar to many here in RB.. Karin Taylor~

Yep! i’m ever so glad and thankful and grateful that i met her and we became friends not long after we both joined RB.. hehe.. it’s been such a cute journey.. i love Karin’s paintings the moment i first saw them..

and i’m so flattered when Karin likes my lil monster’s stupid humor.. ^^” Karin continued being my friend, even when my depression got the worse of me.. and i can hardly exists on RB.. she gave me the confidence to start my SilentCries Series.. of which i’ll be uploading into my frozenfa account on redbubble in awhile, so that i don’t need to maintain 2 accounts, since RB now supports categorizing of portfolios..

it was also thanks to Karin, who somehow happen to chance upon the contact number of someone in the management, that i manage to join PaTH – Pop and Talent Hub in Singapore and start up a physical stall!!

Karin too gave me the permission to be her sorta reseller here in Singapore.. i feel really fortunate and thankful to have found such a kind and talented friend.. X)

Now before i head off to sleep, to every artists and craftwoman/man out there who bullies… Stop bullying!!!

You’re pathetic if you have to resort to bullying your competition in hope that people will purchase from you instead. i really despise businessman/woman who resort to petty schemes in an attempt to pull down their competitor. instead of putting in effort to better yourself, you trying to bring other’s down? The outcome will still be the same. you’re the same old fellow no better than you were before your “competitor” falls. of course, i won’t be surprised if many business people out there don’t agree with me..

Competitors are EVERYWHERE. if you wanna regard someone as a competitor whom you must beat, all the best. You have a whole world of designer to compete against. There will always be someone better than you, and someone doing waaaaaay better than you. Even the best can’t hold reign forever.

“Competition brings out the best in products and the worst in people. ~David Sarnoff”

Personally, i’ve given up on pitting myself against other people. Even if i win someone, there’ll be a million others to win against next. i’ll never be happy. So i’ve always challenge myself instead. I work hard to make my new products better than my old ones. If silly customers keep “bathing” with their necklaces, i work on making it more waterproof. honestly? till now i’m not satisfied with the tile pendants.. i wish can do glass melting or metal welding or buy trays for all, but then the selling price will have to increase, and we all know, in singapore, it’s hard to make a living if you’re selling things too expensive. “Complaining” is our national hobby.. XD if there’s new style to try i’ll try the new style and when people like it, i make more. in this case, i’ve started selling filigree necklaces.. i work on improving my own sales for each weekend-stall rather than try beat other shops.

of course there are many days when business is poor. especially when shoppers have big budgets. they’ll naturally rather shop in boutiques and branded shops than pushcarts. there’re also days when sales is awesome for other vendors but just slow for me. sometimes i’d envy them., these days, i just feel happy for them. i can’t be bothered to be jealous, cos they are selling their designs. if the shoppers that weekend happen to like their stuffs, i can’t expect them to also happen to like my stuffs. sometimes, i’m the one that gets good sales because the shoppers that weekend in the area happens to be shoppers that likes mine and karin’s design. there is no point in being jealous of other people’s business.. envy them if you must.. then work hard on improving your on sales, your own design. not waste time trying to bring other people down.

“Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?” ~Abraham Lincoln

if you have a handmade-jewelery stall, are you going to regard another jewelery stall beside yours as your competition? how about the jewelery shops in the mall..? then how about the jewelery shops in the country? the world? you’ll never be satisfied or happy if you spend your life trying to bring all of them down. Instead, work hard to keep improving your own art/craft. Do lots of marketing and networking. Play nice, and you’ll have more allies than enemies. You never know when you might need their help. Heck, if you’re nice, some might even offer you help before you ask for one! So Play Nice Online and Offline! Stop Bullying!

In addition do check out these articles to find out more about bullies, why they bully and how to deal with or at least cope with bullies.
